Crime Type / Violence Activity:

Drugs/Alcohol Related

Level(s):

Primary
Secondary

Aims:

To tackle the issue of underage drinking in the Prestwick area.

Approach:

A working group was tasked to come up with action plans to combat underage drinking and anti-social behaviour.
Posters were designed, and distributed to all local businesses showing the dangers and scale of fine to those responsible.  People were encouraged to phone Crimestoppers in an attempt to gain intelligence as to where the alcohol was coming from.  The poster was also delivered via a local free paper to all households in the Prestwick area.
The second phase of the project was a joint visit with Licensing and Trading Standards to all off sales which also raised awareness of the Young Scot proof of age scheme and the penalties for selling to persons underage.

Project's Methodology:

There were 7 stands on the circuit:
Police - vandalism jigsaw leading to discussion how alcohol leads to people committing acts of vandalism.
Trading standards - proof of age scheme.
NHS - showing how to put people in recovery position if drunk.
Golf - showing alternatives.
Addiction services - how alcohol affects your judgement and reactions (using beer goggles).
Licensing - what is a unit of alcohol and some basic facts on alcohol.
Dialogue youth - introducing the Dialogue Youth website and benefits of Young Scot scheme.

Other Agencies Involved:

See above.

Evaluation Process:

All the workshops were very interactive and the pupils were given a questionnaire to complete at the end, with iPods and a mountain bike given as prizes.
Feedback from the schools and teachers was very positive and it is hoped to expand the initiative throughout not only South Ayrshire, but the whole county.
