Community Safety Partnerships

Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) exist for each local authority area across Scotland to bring together representatives from police, health, education and other public sector organisations who can collectively  build safer, more inclusive, healthier and more vibrant communities.

The CSPs provide an excellent opportunity to combine expertise, energy and resources to maximise problem solving work in relation to violence reduction.

Examples of CSP action across the country

  • A number of CSPs, including Aberdeen, South & East Ayrshire, Dundee and Glasgow have introduced safe zones with taxi marshals, improved lighting and transport to ensure the prompt and safe dispersal of patrons from the city centre at weekends.
  • Portaloos are being used in a number of town and city centres to clean up the environment and reduce antisocial behaviour.
  • East Dunbartonshire focus on positive interventions for young people which has proved effective in tackling local youth disorder.
  • Highland CSP have introduced community mediation and restorative approaches to tackle anti social behaviour and violence
  • Clackmannanshire has provided a considerable range of youth diversionary activities for young people

A total of 12 CSPs received additional funding from the Scottish Executive for 2006/2007 to develop innovative initiatives to reduce alcohol related town centre disorder. Some of these measures included:

  • Targeted enforcement of problem premises
  • High profile targeted policing
  • Extending or launching pub-watch schemes
  • Applying recognised training standard for licensing staff
  • Identifying persistent offenders for intervention
  • Alcohol free events for young people
