Reducing violence in Scotland is a significant challenge. Tackling it requires not only enforcement through innovative and traditional policing techniques, but also long term attitudinal change.
A reduction in violence cannot be delivered by the police alone - it requires the commitment of a range of agencies, both governmental and voluntary, to join together to prevent violence from occurring (primary prevention), address those individuals at risk of becoming a victim or offender (secondary prevention) and treating those who are already committing violence or are being victimised (tertiary prevention).
The VRU are working with a range of partners to deliver violence reduction through
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Prevention (PDF, 136Kb).
Research shows that as little as 30% of violence is reported to the police.
