Minimum pricing not as effective as thought, say scientists

Alcohol abuse costs Scotland £2.2b a year (Scottish Government Health Analytical Service Division, May 2008). As part of the Alcohol (Scotland) Bill, it is proposed to introduce a minimum sales price for a unit of alcohol.

  • How effective do you think such a move would be? Should there be a minimum price for alcohol?
  • Why / why not?
  • Would introducing a minimum price really reduce alcohol abuse, or do we need other measures in place as well?
  • What do you think would help to reduce Scotland’s problems with alcohol?
